I’ll share plenty of tips, examples and prompts for getting the most out of these AI collaborators. With their help, you’ll have an enchanting Book written by AI ready for young readers in no time. Let’s get creating!
Step 1: Brainstorming a Premise with ChatGPT
Every great story starts with a spark of an idea. When coming up with a premise for a children’s book, you want something imaginative that will capture a child’s curiosity. This is where ChatGPT shines—you can have a back-and-forth conversation to generate creative prompts and refine them.
Try asking ChatGPT questions like:
– What are some whimsical premises that would make a good children’s picture book?
– Can you suggest ideas for an illustrated book that teaches a positive moral or lesson?
– What unique main character would be fun and appealing for 3-8 years old?
Don’t just accept ChatGPT’s first responses. With a few rounds of prompting and feedback, you can land on a premise that excites you. Look for ideas that have a sense of wonder and adventure, lovable characters, and a meaningful lesson. Blend realism with fantasy for maximum impact.
Once you have a general concept, get more specific by asking:
– How can I expand on this premise to create an imaginative world/setting?
– What potential challenges could the main character face?
– What interesting sidekicks or companions could join the journey?
With an AI collaborator, you’ll have original story ideas in no time. Now we can build out the full narrative arc.
Step 2: Plotting the Story Arc with ChatGPT
The next step is developing the overall story structure from beginning to end. A strong arc will keep young readers engaged while conveying your central theme.
Lean on ChatGPT again here by providing your premise and asking questions like:
– Can you map out a complete storyline for a children’s book based on this premise?
– Please include an introduction, rising action, climax, and resolution.
– What are important plot points or adventures that the protagonist could experience throughout?
– How can the character grow or change positively from the start to the conclusion?
ChatGPT will provide thoughtful suggestions for the major narrative beats and turning points. As the human author, you can pick and choose the parts that align with your creative vision for your AI written Book. Refine the AI’s ideas through follow-up questions:
– Could you include a hopeful moral about [theme] in the resolution?
– Instead of overcoming a villain, what’s a more nuanced challenge the hero could face?
– How can side characters contribute to the protagonist’s journey at different points?
With each round of feedback, you mold the plot into the uplifting story you want to tell. This iterative process allows collaboration with AI to craft something truly unique. Now we’re ready to bring the story draft to life.
Step 3: Writing an Initial Draft with ChatGPT
The fun really starts when you get to see your ideas transformed into prose on the page. With your premise and plot outline in hand, prompt ChatGPT to generate an initial draft:
– Please write a short first draft of a children’s story based on the premise and plot I provided. Use imaginative language a 4-8 year old would enjoy.
– Make the draft around 300 words long. Use a playful, upbeat tone suitable for a children’s picture book.
– Focus on bringing the main character to life with dialogue and actions. Include descriptive details of the setting.
The AI will churn out a custom first draft rife with possibilities. But resist the urge to accept the initial result. Instead, provide more guidance:
– Could you make the prose more succinct to hold young readers’ attention?
– How can we weave in lessons of bravery, kindness or confidence subtly?
– Please change the dialogue to be more upbeat and childlike.
By giving thoughtful feedback, you steer ChatGPT to refine the draft in your tone and style. Ask for new versions until you have a springboard you love.
Step 4: Revising the Draft into Your Own Words
Now the creative work really begins! Take the AI-generated draft and revise it to match your unique vision. Here are some tips:
– Read sections aloud to get a feel for the flow and style. Make tweaks to simplify complex sentences.
– Inject your own sense of humor or wonder. Add playful rhyming or made-up words.
– Expand descriptions of characters, settings and key scenes with vivid details.
– Ensure the dialogue sounds natural for each character’s personality and age.
– Tweak or rewrite any parts that feel stilted or disjointed. Ask ChatGPT for alternative text suggestions.
– Weave in foreshadowing or recurring motifs to tie the story together.
– Build to an emotionally resonant or surprising climax that reinforces the theme.
This revision stage is your chance to transform the AI’s work into a truly original tale. Take time crafting engaging prose and memorable moments. Add scenes to draw out the character’s inner journey. Sprinkle in clever rhymes and humorous asides. Make the story your own!
My input to Chagpt
Please write a children’s book for three to five years old. The main character is a pretty young Indian girl named Ammu. She goes to 5th grade. She loves the colour blue and is usually dressed in shades of blue. The story is about Ammu participating in her school cycle race. The hurdles she faces and finally she wins the race. The settings include a big race track and people cheering. The book will be 10 pages long and will not feature more than 10 words per page.
That’s all! Chatgpt created a 10-page story, for children upto the age of 5 including a detailed description of the images that would be created for the article. Based on Chatgpt’s illustration ideas, I employed Midjourney to create the images.
Step 5: Generating Custom Artwork with Midjourney
Now for the fun part—bringing your story to life visually! What’s a children’s book without fun illustrations? This is where Midjourney comes in. Midjourney is an AI art generator that can create stunning images from text prompts. Here’s how to leverage it for your book:

My input to Midjourney
The –seed parameter helped me a lot in generating almost similar images of the main character. The base prompt I used to create the main character after several permutations and combinations is
“Indian girl, 10 years old, has long black hair, brown eyes, and a sharp nose. She loves the colour blue and dresses shades of blue. Disney cartoon style. –ar 4:5”
Taking the seed from the image generated using the above prompt I ended you creating the rest of the images.
“Indian girl, 10 years old, has long black hair, brown eyes, and a sharp nose, wearing a blue cycling jersey and blue head gear. Looking happy for the bike race. Disney cartoon style. –ar 4:5 –seed “
“Indian girl, 10 years old, has long black hair, brown eyes, and a sharp nose, wearing a blue cycling jersey and blue head gear in a bike race sees a puddle and is narrowly avoiding the puddle, face determined. Disney style –ar 4:5 –seed”
Tip: If the story has less characters then it is easy to generate similar looking images using the seed parameter.
